The Endocannabinoid System: How It Really Works

CBD has become an exciting and innovative development in modern science. There has been a huge increase in research over the past few years and we are now finally understanding CBD and its potential health benefits. Many may not know it has actually been in the works for more than half a century.

One of the most commonly reported effects of the compound are its calming abilities, resulting in reduced anxiety. Other reports conclude that CBD helps balance out sleep patterns, increases appetite and even has anti-tumorous properties. The most empowering accounts come from major athletes, in fact, it was just reported that CBD will be on hand for treatment in this summers’ 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

What is ECS?

Through the study of marijuana and its effects during the ‘90s, it was discovered that humans have an endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex cell-signaling system that plays a crucial role in regulating our physiology, mood and everyday experience. ECS exists and is active in the body whether cannabis is used or not.

The ECS involves three main components: cannabinoids receptors, which are found on the surface of cells, endocannabinoids, small molecules that activate the cannabinoid receptors, and lastly, metabolic enzymes, which break down the endocannabinoids after they are used.

The Process

Cannabinoids receptors sit on the surface of cells and “listen” to everything going on outside the cell. They are able to transmit information about any changes and begin the appropriate cellular response. The 2 major cannabinoid receptors are CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are abundant in the brain and interact with THC – the compound that provides the “high.” CB2 receptors are found more on the outside of the nervous system, such as the immune system. Through these receptors, the ECS helps regulate a lot of important functions such as appetite, mood, sleep, memory, pain and immune function. It is the endocannabinoid molecules that are produced naturally by cell in the human body which bind and activate cannabinoid receptors. Once the endocannabinoids have done their job and bring things back into balance, certain enzymes come along to break them down and help restore the body back to homeostasis.

Because CBD Products can stimulate activity of the ECS, they act as potential treatments, which is what is being studied today. Natures Wealth products are thoroughly lab tested through an FDA certified facility and work diligently to get you the most effective results and keep you at homeostasis.
